I made this cake for my friend Scott's birthday, which was yesterday. Kim, his wife, rescued an iguana a few years ago, and the lizard is very bad-tempered (as most poorly cared for iguanas are). Scott hates the iguana with a passion. So I figured it would be hilarious to make him an iguana cake!!!

I'll post more detailed in-progress pictures in scraps eventually, but for now, I'll give y'all a quick rundown of how I did this.

I used three boxes of red velvet cake mix (yes, the cake itself was red!) and poured them into loaf pans of various sizes. I then put the loaves in order from biggest to smallest, making the front of the biggest the head, and the smallest would be the end of the tail. I carved the shape of the head, body, and tail with a knife while using scraps from the carving to make the spine and the legs. (My friend Kim carved most of the head and all four limbs.) I then covered the entire thing in a layer of icing to smooth out the rough spots and hold it all together. I used a round icing tip to make the smooth head scales and toes and a "leaf" tip to make the scales and spines. The button eyes are an inside joke: we recently watched Tim Burton's Neil Gaiman's Coraline and were freaked out at the people with buttons for eyes. I figured this would make the cake even more creepy! (It worked.)

This dessert is made of only cake, icing, and two buttons. The entire thing is 24 inches (61 cm) long, 19 inches (48 cm) wide, and 4 inches (10 cm) high.

And let me say, I LOVE how it turned out!

EDIT: I finally got the in-progress stuff uploaded: [link]
