Inspired by a lovely (and surprisingly calm) Western Tiger Swallowtail that visited my balcony earlier last week. (He even allowed me to take multiple close-up pictures of him! He was beautiful!)
The dragon is, of course, colored after the Western Tiger Swallowtail, albeit with the brightness meter turned up a few notches. (He sure is full of himself, isn't he?) The other butterflies are as follows (beginning left and going clockwise): Anise Swallowtail, Pale Swallowtail, and Giant Swallowtail.
I like butterflies. ^.^
And look! My fur texture is improving (slightly)! But even with a reference, my backgrounds still look like crap. -.-
Colored pencils and a dash of micron pen. 8.5 x 11 inches.
References: Allison Theus' "Shmexyness" for the background as I need to figure out how to do simple, unobtrusive, yet decent backgrounds.
I love the idea of taking a butterflies mannerisms and putting them into dragon form! You did an excellent job with the detail. i especially like the folds in the wings. Even though it is a dragon, I think think of it more as a butterfly.
