Sub-horizon Halos

Description

I had a special treat on the flight home from Toronto yesterday: sub-horizon sun halos!! It's amazing what one finds when one knows what to look for.... :D Anyway, these halos are usually found below the horizon (typically a problem for viewing), but when on an airplane, the horizon becomes less of a problem. First, a subsun showed up (top image) and came and went for most of the flight. I'd forgotten that subparhelia could form until later, when they started to stand out (middle image, and faintly in the top image). Then as we flew through several anvil clouds, a 22-degree halo appeared and stayed for quite some time.

I looked and looked and looked for a lower tangent arc, but I never saw one. :( Ah, well. These were enough to get me all excited (and forget about the book I was reading for two hours).

Don't let it get into your head. I bet that some devilish creature's sweat splashed over the window while it was tearing the wing off the plane, and those things you see were reflected on that filthy water. :P
